"FEMME FATALE" Drawings work in progress (May - ongoing 2008) Part of the 'Fabrications' series, these charcoal drawings are preparatory work in progress studies towards paintings based on glamorous and seductive fabrics worn by femme fatales (or sirens) of Film Noir. Black netting and lace exposes flesh whilst also presenting a decorative yet impenetrable barrier. This type of fabric is sheer and fine and like a spider's web belies its structure and strength. The fabric utilises flamboyant decorous forms that mimic nature - artificial devices to visually seduce and attract the 'prey'. There is a similarity with tattoos used as a sexual lure. The drawings focus on close-ups, or details, which shows the decorous and luxurious fabric at an uncomfortable proximity...polka dot lace smudges into shapes that almost look like hairs growing from follicles in the skin, for example. The idea that the closer you look at something that is alluring the more it seems to convey the opposite. The use of charcoal on paper emphasises the chiaroscuro, or ephemeral, effect that is a symbol of film noir. |
